I hear advice all the time along the lines of “buy things that you love and your home will come together.”
Before I decorated professionally, this made sense to me. If I love the components then I’m bound to love the finished product, right? In reality, this advice is seriously misguided and rarely leads to a cohesive, well-designed space.
Humor me: imagine your home is a meal and each room is a dish. The ingredients in each dish, like a salad, need to coordinate with one another to taste good. I can't just grab foods that I love and expect them to work together - I’d end up with a dark chocolate, cheddar cheese, mango, and arugula salad.
So, how do you avoid designing a room as random as my salad? Choose furnishings and decor that you like or love AND that compliment one another. Each piece should also relate to, or at least not clash with, the overall design style of the rest of the room.
The best way for a beginner to accomplish this is to come up with a descriptive phrase to describe the overall vibe and style you hope to accomplish in a room. More on this soon, be sure to check back!
